I have read that aquatic plants can be used for tertiary water treatment to remove heavy metals from waste water. What property/charactistic of the plant accounts for this?

Some of the plants can absorb the hydrocarbon oils, so i presume the same is true of heavy metals
Ah, well, there’s a problem here you see. Many aquatic plants die, and die quickly, if they’re exposed to copper. Which is a heavy metal. I’m not sure how aquatic plants would do around other heavy metals, but the only one I’ve exposed them to, copper, kills them in hours.
What water plant were you thinking of that could withstand heavy metals? None of the ones used in the aquarium trade can.
